Nearly half of the tap water samples contained “forever chemicals” PFAS – Why they pose a risk
PFAS chemicals are water-resistant, meaning they do not break down in the environment and remain in the human body for years.
Nearly half of the tap water samples in the US contain toxic “forever chemicals.” These are substances used in hundreds of household items, from cleaners to pizza boxes. As a result, continuous exposure to them can cause serious health problems, according to new research.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) conducted checks. For this, it collected samples from more than 700 homes, businesses, and water treatment plants for the presence of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
After this, they detected such a synthetic chemical in at least 45% of the samples. In fact, the researchers pointed out that it is at levels above the permissible limits recommended by the American authorities.
The risks from PFAS chemicals
PFAS chemicals are water-resistant. This means that they do not break down in the environment and remain in the human body for years. They first appeared in the 1940s with the creation of Teflon. It is the non-stick material used in cookware that is now applied to a vast range of products.
Previous studies have measured the levels of PFAS in groundwater, reservoirs, and water treatment plants. However, analyzing tap water allows for a more accurate assessment of what people are drinking. This was stated by the lead researcher, Kelly Smolling, a hydrologist at USGS.
Therefore, exposure to high levels of PFAS chemicals can cause hormonal disruptions among other issues. Additionally, it may affect liver function, increase the risk of cancer in the kidneys and testes. It is also likely to cause a reduction in newborn weight and impact the health of pregnant women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Moreover, in relation to people living in rural areas, those living in large urban centers are more exposed to PFAS chemicals in drinking water, according to the research.
