We often hear the question, especially in Cyprus: “Does your filter remove the stone from the water?”. However, it is important to clarify that the term “stone” is not scientific. When someone refers to “stone,” they actually mean the hardness of the water, that is, the presence of dissolved mineral salts, mainly calcium and magnesium.
🧪 Priority: Removal of Chemicals and Toxic Substances
Before we examine the issue of hardness, it is crucial to know that the most significant problems with drinking water today are not the salts, but dangerous chemicals, such as:
- Chlorine and chlorination by-products (e.g. THMs)
- Pesticides and drug residues
- Heavy metals, microplastics, PFAS and other carcinogenic compounds
The above are invisible, tasteless, odorless, but also much more harmful to health than the visible salts on tiles, faucets, or kettles. That is why the primary priority of any water filter should be the removal of these substances, in order to protect human health, especially that of children.
You can have mineral salts in your water and at the same time drink absolutely pure water from chemicals – and vice versa: you may not have many mineral salts but drink water full of dangerous compounds. Therefore, the aesthetic problem of salts should not be your main concern.
