They declared war on bottled water (THE NEWS)

thumbnail

War on bottled water from experts due to environmental burden.

Disastrous for the environment are the millions of plastic bottles

The Quality

As Todd Jarvis, head of the Water Resources Graduate Program at the University of Oregon, points out, consumers mistakenly believe that spring water is very clean and ignore the fact that waters close to the ground often collect pollutants that are rarely found in municipal reservoirs.

To support the quality, experts point out that limits have been set for the concentration of harmful substances, such as benzene, in tap water, which does not apply to bottled water. Additionally, tap water does not come into contact with the plastic of the bottle, which at high temperatures can leach harmful substances into the water. This explains the war on bottled water from the perspective of scientists.

How much bottled water costs the environment

  1. The Production

The 154 billion liters of water consumed in a year are bottled in 2.5 billion tons of plastic, for the production of which 81 million liters of oil and 600 billion liters of water are required.

  1. The Transfer

To transport 10,000 plastic water bottles, a truck consumes 1 liter of diesel every 4 kilometers.

To cover 1,000 km, the truck will consume 250 liters of diesel, which is 25 cubic centimeters of diesel for each bottle.

Multiplying 25 cubic centimeters by 100, which is the annual average consumption in bottles in the European Union, it turns out that for one bottle a day, 2.5 liters of diesel are consumed per year.

  1. The Pollution

When bottles are burned in incineration furnaces, they produce hydrochloric acid, heavy metals, and dioxins. Only a third of the plastic turns to ash.

30 plastic bottles leave in the atmosphere: 40 g of hydrocarbons, 22 g of sulfur oxides, 18 g of carbon monoxide, and 2-3 kg of carbon dioxide.

Bottled water is 600 times more expensive than tap water in Athens.

The UN wants to drastically reduce plastic pollution by 2040. Here’s how
